The Tuscany Scouts and Ventures are planning to attend the Pacific Jamboree in July 2015. This event will be held at Scouts Canada's Camp Barnard in Sooke, BC. We can prepare for a week of exciting Scouting adventures!

The 243 Tuscany Scouts group attended the Senator Buchanan Winter Camp at camp Impeesa over the February long weekend.  The camp was geared towards acquiring knowledge and skills for overnight winter hiking trips.  The weekend was filled with very useful sessions each addressing different skills:

Shelter Building

At the shelter building session I learned lots about all kinds of different snow shelters.  We addressed the quinzee type shelter in more detail.  The basement idea, where you build the quinzee with two feet of snow at the bottom so the entrance is elevated and the cold air will sink down making the quizee itself warmer, was probably the most helpful thing I learned.  Also, using sticks to tell you how far you are from the outside wall was a helpful hint.

Another fun camp has come and gone for the Tuscany Scouts…That’s three camp weekends since September! On November 16th to the 18th, the Scouts enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Barrier Lake Field Station in Kananaskis, approximately 80km from Calgary. The camp preparation began a week in advance when the Scouts planned out the menu for the weekend.  In the spirit of learning by doing, a shopping list was prepared and the assistant patrol leaders met at Sobeys to do the grocery shopping for the camp – the goal:  get enough food for 4 meals to feed 16 Scouts and 7 leaders. After a short drive, the carpool arrived at the field station on Friday evening and proceeded to pack their gear into the Forestry Lodge which is equipped with a 32 person bunkhouse, a large kitchen and dining facility. Once everyone was settled in, we had a quick safety meeting then the Scouts proceeded to enjoy some free time playing various board games.  After hot chocolate and a snack, the Scouts were settled into their sleeping bags for the night.
